|After exploring the other gourd series (turtles, frogs, dragons, and cats), I wanted to expand my portfolio. My next
creature to explore - beetles! Of all the creepy crawlies, I find them and spiders the most fascinating. Gourds are the
perfect shape for creating beetles and spiders. Once I made the first beetle for my best friend Kayla Kimberlin, I
knew I wanted to make more. Miniature beetles, and then spiders, soon followed. See what cool and creepy crawlies

|Hyper-Realistic Gourd Beetles
|Gourd Beetles are composed of two egg or ball shaped gourds
(one for the abdomen, another for the body/head.) Wire is then
used to base the legs and various clays make the details. To
make them even more realistic, I use sharp points from a seed
pod to give their legs littles spikes. Every beetle has a wire
attached to its belly so it can be hung on a wall for display.

|Gourd Beetle # 5 - Rainbow Scarab Beetle
The sculpting progress of a gourd beetle. They start with gourd assembly and wire application, then
to sculpting and painting.
|Gourd Beetle #17 - Eastern Cicada (top, 14" long) and #18 - 17 Year Cicada (left). Their wings are made of acrylic.
|Gourd Beetle # 16: Glorious Beetle. 7.5" long
|Gourd Beetle # 7: Ecuador Beetle. 7" long.
|Gourd Beetle # 11: Five-horn Beetle. 6.5" long.
|Gourd Beetle # 12: Dung Beetle. This little sculpture started digging in the dirt while I wasn't looking.
|Miniature gourd beetles are made in the same way the large ones are. Two small gourds, which are the bottom halves of dwarf bottle gourds, are attached together. Mini beetles are between 4 and 5.5 inches long.
