"Bark 'n' Bite"
8x8" acrylic on wood
(C) Cara Bevan 2009
This painting, called “Bark and Bite” was supposed
to be done later, while I was doing the complicated
architectural piece
"One Way", but I couldn’t wait. I
experimented with speckling, a technique where
paint is dripped or slung onto the artwork with a stiff
paintbrush or toothbrush. After I painted a base
color, I used a toothbrush to splatter five layers of
colors onto the artwork. This created an interesting
pitted texture, perfect for tree bark. I added defining
shadows and highlights to complete the artwork in
two hours. Look closely and you’ll see why I called it
“Bark and Bite.”
