"Bevan Barn" 9x12" acrylic on canvas (C) Cara Bevan 2008
My first painting of 2008 is actually my dad’s Christmas present – a painting of our new barn. This painting entitled “Bevan Barn” is a tribute to all of the hard work my father, Ricky Bevan, has put into this antique barn to keep it around for many years to come. This barn was originally built by the Hill family in 1948. It’s a huge barn: it’s two stories tall (with the top floor having enough space to put a tennis court in it), many stalls meant to shelter cows, a grain loft four feet above the ground, an outside storage area, and an inside storage area. The barn itself is made of unusually large walnut boards which has given it the stability it has now. Compared to the small house near it, built at the same time, the barn looks brand new! The poor little house is crumbling and is going to be demolished. When my parents first bought the property with the structures, the barn was white with missing doors, junk covered insides, peeling paint, a rusting roof, and warping panels of wood. Since then my father has slaved many weekends with his employees to make the barn the splendor it is today. It looks like it could have been built yesterday with new gray paint, a new metal roof, new doors on both ends, flood lights for the interior and exterior, and all destruction repaired. It’s a rare treat to be able to own and cherish one of the few standing antique barns in the area, and this hard earned barn is my dad’s pride and joy. To preserve the old for the new age; my father has completed one New Year’s resolution.
Poem inspired by this painting By VixyyFox In the stillness of the evening you can feel what has passed before; a simple barn saved from aged ignominy contains much history and speaks of it in the quiet groans and whispers allocated to such a building. The beginning was Mr. Hill; an uncomplicated farmer providing for his animals. The middle was Ricky Bevan; a man understanding that the past, once gone, carries with it in death all that it touched upon during life. The end, now, has been postponed. Walnut boards on a stone foundation with a new metal roof; painted, preserved, and used again. If only we could be saved in a like manner.
