| "Blue Raspberry Jelly" 12x24" acrylic on canvas (C) Cara Bevan 2008 |
| After doing “Crustacean Salutation” and a commission just as complicated, I was longing to paint something simple. The simplest painting yet has become “Blue Raspberry Jelly.” Jellyfish are not really fish – they are invertebrates, related to coral and sea anemones, and are classed as plankton. Some jellyfish can be as small as one inch to as large as 200 feet long! Jellyfish have no head, brain, heart, eyes, or ears. They don’t have bones, either. Instead they capture their food with thousands of poisonous tentacles and digest it in their dome shaped bodies. Because jellyfish have no bones, they can’t control where the ocean current takes them. That’s how so many jellyfish end up on land, from snowy shores to tropic beaches. Also varying is their poison. On every hair- thin tentacle is millions of microscopic barbs that have a poison stored within them. Some poison won’t hurt humans, others cause mild discomfort, and a rare few can cause excruciating pain and even death! But jellyfish are gentle creatures, flowing where the water takes them. They don’t have a care in the world, and as long as we don’t encounter them we won’t either. |
