| "Carpenters' Lunch Break" 9x12" acrylic on canvas (C) Cara Bevan 2007 |
| This painting, called “Carpenters’ Lunch Break”, was inspired by a personal experience Walter Staton told me. Although his tale is about honey bees, my painting is of carpenter bees because we don’t have honey bees around here…I didn’t notice that until I had already finished the painting. Still, Mr. Staton’s touching story helped bring this painting to life: “I was around 13 years old when I went to the home of a relative one summer. In the yard were many flowers and bees. But one bee had so much pollen on its legs that it couldn’t fly and get out of the grass. I found a tiny stick and, getting down on my knees, I used it to gently rub the pollen of his back legs. The bee seemed to know what I was doing – I was trying to help it, not harm it. As crazy as it sounds, the bee actually held its back legs out so I could do the job. Its legs were thickly covered with yellow pollen. After I scraped a little off of each leg he was able to fly. He then lifted off the ground and flew away.” It does sound like an unbelievable story, but I believe it. Animals know when someone is trying to help and, when they are in need, they will take all the help they can get. Kudos to Walter Staton and his kindness towards animals and to anyone else who does the same! |
