I’ve always admired cats, of course, but secondary to them I’ve always admired nature. Imperfectly perfect
and beautiful, nature creates so much wonder. The artistic side of me goes nuts whenever I take a hike in the
woods! One wonder has become my new painting surface. Driftwood -  more specifically, old cedar fence
posts. They were put on my family’s property when it used to be a cattle farm. When there was no pond, no
driveway, no trails to enjoy. A man stapled barbed wire to trees and made that his fence. Many of those trees
are still alive, rusty barbed wire growing out and beyond them to another tree. Many have rotted away. The
cedar posts though stayed preserved through weather and disassembly. My father collected some, cut them
into slices, and now they are a new and beautiful surface for painting. Their unique shapes and bark edges
made me fall in love at the first brush stroke! These two paintings, of my cats Poomba (left) and Bird (right) in
grass, are only the first of many cedar wood paintings.
