| "Green Lynx" 9.75 x 9.75" acrylic on wood (C) Cara Bevan 2011 |

| Having a garden brings about all sorts of wildlife you’ve never seen before. One I was introduced to, and have come to adore, is the Green Lynx spider. These arachnids that can grow to an inch in length are a wondrous sight to see. Bright green in color, they blend in so well with flower leaves that they’re almost invisible. The white and black slash marks in their backs break up their outline and is perfect for their wait-and-pounce style hunting. They make webs, but it’s only used for anchors and nest building. Their preferred meal is bees and wasps. They’re one of the few spiders (and the only known in the USA) that can spray their venom forwards, for offense and defense. Their venom is no harm to humans and they’ re docile, rarely striking unless threatened. I’ve only seen a handful of these garden guests, but I admire them whenever I can spot them. |
