"Niña"
8x10" acrylic on canvas
(C) Cara Bevan 2009
When dogs are family, it’s hard to believe they aren’t human. Niña (pronounced (neen-
ya) is a cocker spaniel who truly believes she is just that. She is a boisterous and
cunning dog that knows what she wants. Her human father started the bad habit of
feeding her table scraps and now she can’t wait for the sound of the electric knife – she
knows it means food. Niña will do anything to get treats, including meaty dog cookies
and cheese. Catching them expertly is one of her many skills. As a human-like dog, she
demands to sleep on a bed. She’ll take nothing less, and you know when she wants
something! She’ll tilt her head back and howl like a banshee when she wants in and no
one is letting her. Niña can get so worked up it takes several minutes to calm back
down. But Niña, above all else, loves boats. Sitting on a boat with her parents while they
fish is her favorite pastime. Even when other dogs are in the water playing, she sits on
the bench and happily watches. The wind in her fur, the smell of water and nature
swirling around her. It’s a peace unlike any other and Niña loves every second of it.

Comment from the owner, Meg Herndon:

Just wanted to say thanks for Nina  You captured her well though my grands say "is she growling"
they haven't seen the old lady smile in a while though regardless of cancer she continues to be fairly
lively. My husband took her for a boat ride this past week.  That is how spoiled she is! When we worry
about her eating she gets hamburger.  I think she may not go back to the soft dog food. The vet says
give her what she wants, and we will. For now we are watching her and as long as she isn't suffering
we will cater to her every need.  When the time comes we will have her lovely painting!Thank you so
much. Love Johnny, Meg and Nina
ps Nina was named when I gave her to my daughter 14 years ago for her 15th birthday  She had
come back from a church mission trip to Mexico and yes Nina meant little girl  She quickly became a
very fat cocker, but Nina stuck.  She does have very, very curly hair when she is well and her coat is
healthy and you DID do a great job with that!
