| "Payback is Hell" 6x12" acrylic on mounted ampersand (C) Cara Bevan 2008 |
| The bull has been the most confused species in human history. In India it is revered and worshipped. Harm to a bull there results in the highest penalty. In most cultures though it is the victim of our boredom and egotism. That’s why I painted “Payback is Hell.” The games against bulls started in Greek and Rome. In Greece the myth of the Minotaur was created. The half man, half bull was born of lust and because of its appearance it was locked in a labyrinth only to be starved and killed. In Rome’s great coliseum, bulls were common victims among other wild creatures. Like every animal they toyed with, the bulls were taunted and slaughtered by Roman gladiators. In Spain and nearby countries the slaughter continues. In every day bullfights, matadors take to the ring and trick, spear, and gore the bulls. They bleed to death angry and confused, born and bred to fight and die. Many supporting these fights say it is important to their culture and heritage. Others, like me, think it is just another way to stroke their ego and blood thirst. In the Americas and surrounding countries we hold rodeos that don’t involve harming the bull, but it still looks down upon them. In my painting, a Minotaur stands defensive holding a great hammer. Decorated Spanish spikes dig into his back, but he grins. He cannot undo the pain his cousins have endured for hundreds of years but he can try. At least to save his own life, he can try. |
