| "Secret Conference" 11x14" oval, acrylic on canvas (C) Cara Bevan 2007 |
| I began painting “Secret Conference” just for the trees, but the crowd of blackbirds in my reference photo made me think. It’s common knowledge that most animals lack the ability to speak (in our definition of speech), but the fact gets warped when you think about birds. Almost every bird has its own language. It can be songs, chirps, squeaks, screams, barks, or a wide range of other noises. To us it sounds like a foreign language, but to them it is words. If you have ever listened to a group of crows or other bird specie, you can hear all of the different tones and combinations of noises they communicate with. If one bird found a tasty treat, another bird will make a sound to alert the others; the birds will respond quickly by trying to get a portion of it. Also, if a scout sees a predator it will scream to the rest of its flock to flee. Not only will one specie of bird will respond to the warning, but every bird and small mammal in the vicinity will react and fight or flee. There is also a universal language that is known to all animals that doesn’t involve words or sounds – body language. Every animal, whether it is a bird, fish, reptile, mammal, or other kind of creature has body language and from that you can read their intentions and thoughts. All animals have the ability to communicate in their own way; we just have to know how to interpret them. |
