| "The Power of Prayer" 16x20" acrylic on canvas (C) Cara Bevan 2007 |
| Praying mantises hold a special place in my heart. They are docile, gentle, and ever helpful to the environment…and they are good at surprises. Thus “The Power of Prayer” was created. I enjoy collecting strange bugs and nests that I find, usually the bugs are already dead and the nests are empty. However, one year, a day before my birthday, I got an unexpected treat. A praying mantis nest I collected hatched in my bedroom. Hundreds of tiny, semi transparent, newborn praying mantises shuffled around my room. I was in school at the time and it was already late that night. My mom and I had to find every single one, even though they were hard to see on the hardwood floor, and gently toss them out of a window onto the bushes below. The hatchlings were so light that they literally floated to the ground! One particular mantis sat in my hand as I waited for it to jump out of the window. It did, right onto a passing dandelion seed! I couldn't believe my eyes. It took about an hour to safely transport the mantises out of my room. Ever since then I have paid more attention to these interesting insects. Their hatching was a birthday gift I am never going to forget. |
