"They Stole My Heart!"

They stole my heart earty angel colored pencil artwork
Intended as a colored pencil demonstration for Blair Collin’s after school art group, this turned into a full
project. “They Stole My Heart!” was first planned in 2008. A commercial aired that year got my attention,
and I didn’t like it. A paper cutout woman took a heart shape from her chest, handing it to her man after a
long and tedious journey. The idea of handing over a “heart” has a typical meaning, but I saw it as
something else. In this colored pencil artwork, the Angel of Nature is screaming at the hole in her chest.
She trusted her body to the creatures living in nature. Man, in their quest for natural dominance, cut a
heart shape from her and left a gaping hole. Her outstretched wing is fading in color from the misuse.
Soon, she’ll become grey and overcome by sorrow. As shocking and sad as this artwork may be, there’s
still hope. Hearts can be mended with tender loving care.
