| There are moments in life where all you can think is “I’m witnessing magic.” That sense of magic is unique to every individual but when you come upon it, you know it. I had that sense of magic September 4th, 2008, and it inspired this painting called “Witnessing Magic.” It was another beautiful day – warm weather with a cool, relaxing breeze – so I decided to take a hike through the woods with my camera. I walked to our pond, an acre in size, to view the wildlife. I looked for the writing spiders that made their home there and I fed them as usual. Then, beside the water in some very tall grasses, I saw magic. On the top of the grasses was a huge clump of baby spiders, numbering in the hundreds of individuals. They were newly hatched Rabid Wolf spiders – despite their name, they are not aggressive. The mother even carries the hatchlings on her back until they are ready to go their own way. The tiny spiders, hardly three to five millimeters long, were traveling between the trio of stalk like grasses anxiously. Then a breeze came, and they let go! I moved aside as they flew away with the wind, a strand of web as their parachute. Awaiting the next breeze, some of the babies crawled onto the end of long web tethers. Others dropped on their own line and hung like swinging monkeys. Many still were too scared to go. I saw several newborns about to let go but when the breeze came they scurried back to the grasses as fast as they could. My first thought was that I had witnessed magic – these spiders, barely a few days old, were setting off into a world so big and so daunting. Most were fearless, letting the wind take them, but even those with reservations eventually left their fears behind. They filled me with hope, brought a smile on my face of pure joy. I could feel their innocence and their bravery and it uplifted my soul. May everyone feel that magic (if you haven’t already) because a little magic goes a long way. ***Note: Because the spiders are so tiny in my painting, I have made a miniature painting depicting the newborn spiders titled “Behind the Magic” below *** |
